The raw feeding debate is loud, emotional, and light on evidence. Let’s look at what science actually tells us.
The Arguments For
Proponents report shinier coats, cleaner teeth, smaller stools, and improved energy. These observations are consistent but anecdotal — no large-scale, long-term studies confirm them. The theoretical basis (dogs evolved from wolves and thrive on raw meat) oversimplifies 15,000 years of domestication.
The Risks
Pathogen contamination is real. Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria are found in commercial raw diets at significant rates. These bacteria pose risks to the dog and to the humans in the household — especially children, elderly people, and immunocompromised individuals. Nutritional imbalance is another concern. Homemade raw diets are frequently deficient in calcium, vitamin D, and other essential nutrients.
