10 Signs Your Dog Is in Pain — and What to Do

Dogs evolved to hide weakness from predators. By the time they show obvious signs of pain, the condition is often advanced.

  • Changes in eating or drinking — Reduced appetite or excessive thirst can signal everything from dental pain to kidney issues.
  • Excessive licking — A dog obsessively licking one spot is often trying to soothe internal pain beneath the skin.
  • Altered breathing — Shallow, rapid breathing or panting without exercise can indicate pain or stress.
  • Posture changes — A hunched back, tucked tail, or “praying position” (front down, rear up) can signal abdominal pain.
  • Sudden aggression — The sweetest dog may snap when touched if they’re hurting. This is pain, not betrayal.
