Dental disease is the most common health problem in dogs — and the most preventable. Your dog’s mouth is a gateway to their overall health.
Daily Brushing Is the Gold Standard
Nothing replaces mechanical removal of plaque. Use dog-specific toothpaste (never human toothpaste — xylitol is toxic) and a soft-bristled brush. Aim for daily, accept three times weekly as the minimum. Start slow — a week of just letting the dog taste the toothpaste, another week touching the brush to teeth without scrubbing.
What Actually Helps
Dental chews with the VOHC seal (Veterinary Oral Health Council), water additives with enzymatic action, and dental diets with larger kibble designed to scrape teeth. Regular veterinary dental cleanings under anesthesia are necessary — no amount of brushing replaces professional care.
