Every year, dogs die from eating things they shouldn’t — dropped medication, chocolate, dead animals. “Leave it” is the command that prevents tragedy.
The Training Protocol
Start with a low-value treat in one hand and a high-value treat in the other. Show the boring treat, say “leave it,” and when your dog stops sniffing it, reward with the high-value treat from the other hand. Never let them have the “leave it” item. The lesson: ignoring something good leads to something better.
Proofing It
Gradually increase difficulty. Move from treats to toys, from a closed hand to an open one, from your kitchen to the sidewalk. A truly proofed “leave it” works with a dropped chicken bone on a busy street. This takes months of practice — and it’s worth every session.
