How to Introduce a New Dog to Your Resident Dog

Bringing home a second dog should be joyful — not stressful. The key is the introduction.

Phase 1: Neutral Territory First

Never bring the new dog directly into your home. Meet outside, on neutral ground — a park neither dog considers theirs. Walk them parallel to each other, 20 feet apart, gradually closing the gap. Parallel walking is the most natural way for dogs to bond.

Phase 2: The Home Entry

The resident dog enters the house first, then the new dog. Keep them separated by baby gates for at least 24 hours. They can see and smell each other without direct access. Feed them on opposite sides of the gate to create positive associations.
