Crate training isn’t about confinement — it’s about creating a den. A properly crate-trained dog sees their crate as a sanctuary, not a cage.
Day 1-2: Introduction Without Pressure
Place the crate in a high-traffic area. Leave the door open. Toss treats inside and let the puppy explore freely. Never force them in. Feed meals near the crate, then just inside. Your puppy should associate the crate with good things only.
Day 3-4: Short Sessions
Close the door for 30 seconds while you’re sitting next to the crate. Gradually extend to 2 minutes, then 5. Stay visible. Your puppy needs to learn that the door closes AND opens — it’s temporary and you always come back.
